Maybe we should take the fact of radio silence from outer space personally. The Drake equation states that the universe should be teaming with life but what if we are not considered worth the effort to contacting? It's all too easy to think from our perspective: human curiosity, a thirst for variation, a desire to 'contribute', because we can, power… but it is likely that the 'intelligence out their' has got to where it is by ignoring all these attributes?.
Or maybe we have already shown all the tell tail signs of a world that will self destruct, maybe their capacity for empathy (possibly being immortal?) far exceeds ours and 'ones bitten twice shy'; their collective conscious couldn't take another 'heart wrenching' tragedy such as they have so frequently observed, so choose to ignore, after all they have far more interesting things to ponder on (what ever they are since we will never know). Anyhow lets prove them wrong, that's what I would like humanity to change, "we'll show them" we say as we shake our puny little fist.
The Kyoto agreement is the most important agreement. For the last 3 months the Cafe Scientifique talks in Oxford have discussed about sustainable energy sources. We would all like to think that a technological solution to Global Warming is around the corner but it isn't! Fusion (clean CO2 free energy), hydrogen fuel cells and renewable energy sources are all fraught with many problems and are under funded. We all have to act now from the World governments to individuals.
A hypothetical objective position that might be useful is: if you where an alien intelligence what would you make of the way us humans behave? I know personally that they would see me as being too angry to be effective at encouraging people to save our planet so I have tried to hold my temper, but right now I'm furious at Joe public behaving predictably and mostly ignoring our first responsibility (the thing we live on).
