When a visitor saves your WebPages as one of their favourites the site title is added to their list along with an icon: To help the web surfer revisit your site an intriguing image could be put in the place of the default icon, this is what a Favicon's ("favourites" icon) is. Creating your own identity like this makes your site easy to find, giving the surfer a flavour of you site before they are even their, however there is a major restrictions: Internet Explorer only gives you a 16 X 16 pixel picture area.
I wanted a strong 'T' letter for timemorph on a delicate bubble to see how far I could push the illusion in so few pixels. So long as the 'T' can be seen and the icon stands out I don't mind how successful the bubble effect is. The image suggests (correctly) that the site shows photographic images and is imaginative.
The art of creating favicons is choosing images that work with so few pixels. The secret to this is a very bold simple image, after a while its surprising what information you can fit in. The graphic is saved … The four images in the left column should brake down into a 16 x 16 block when you hover your mouse over it. The first image seems clear enough but in fact theirs no way the image could be recognised. When it comes to text anything more than three letters is going to be a challenge again the example becomes utterly unreadable. Many successful favicons are created in 3d because at such a small size, so long as the shape is very predictable (often geometric) the eye can, to some extent, fill in the shape gaps. The pot chosen, even though it is a simple shape becomes unrecognisable not being a familiar object. The butterfly seems simple enough until viewed at the limited resolution. Shapes such as these are best drawn in a bold cartoon fashion with emphasis in the edges.
With my wide ranging graphic skills and my early experience in the computer games industry creating tiny sprits men. I could create an arresting eye grabbing icon for your company. Although they may seen inconsequential a good favicon is surprisingly effective at increasing the traffic to your site. The price will depend on what is involved to create these small perfectly formed graphics. E-mail me for details at: timemorph@gmail.com
